Equinor chooses Automation as a Service from Element Logic

Element Logic has entered into an agreement with Equinor for the delivery of an AutoStore system to the Mongstad facility on Norway’s west coast. Equinor is a global energy company developing oil, gas, and renewable energy to power the transition to a low-carbon future.
This collaboration marks two key milestones: Equinor becomes Element Logic’s first customer within the Norwegian oil and gas industry, and the very first to implement the company’s new Automation as a Service (AaaS) model.
Mongstad is home to one of Norway’s largest and most complex industrial energy hubs, operating 24/7 with high demands for availability, safety and predictability. In addition to being a major oil refinery, the site also includes a crude oil terminal, gas processing and petrochemical operations. As a critical component of Norway’s energy infrastructure, it requires operational excellence at every level, one of the key reasons Equinor has chosen a new approach to automation.

Element Logic has previously delivered automation to the Mongstad facility. This latest partnership builds on that experience, while taking a significant step forward: Element Logic will now hold long-term operational responsibility for ensuring the system’s performance and availability throughout its lifecycle.

Subscribing to performance – not ownership
Rather than owning and operating the automation system themselves, Equinor has chosen to subscribe to a defined performance outcome through Automation as a Service. This means that Element Logic takes full operational responsibility for running the solution, ensuring availability, and continuously optimizing performance. The AaaS model is tailored for companies seeking flexibility and reliability, without tying up capital in major upfront investments or building internal automation expertise.
Equinor’s decision to implement Automation as a Service at Mongstad sends a clear signal to the market: Industrial players want flexible solutions, but with defined performance commitments and shared responsibility over time. When a company like Equinor chooses this model, it confirms the need for partnerships that combine shared responsibility, risk, and knowledge,” says Andreas Kristensen, Customer Success Director, Element Logic Scandinavia

Around-the-clock access to critical spare parts
The solution at Mongstad will serve as a secure inventory for critical spare parts. A dedicated pick-up port ensures technicians and maintenance personnel have 24/7 access to the parts they need, regardless of the time of day.
The system will be monitored and evaluated based on clear performance indicators: storage capacity, throughput and availability. These are the metrics Equinor is subscribing to and which Element Logic is accountable for delivering, every single day.
Entering a new segment with a long-term view
The agreement with Equinor marks Element Logic’s entry into a new industrial segment in Norway. The oil and gas industry places high demands on stability, safety and lifecycle thinking – areas where the AaaS model delivers substantial value. As a solution partner, Element Logic is also responsible for system lifecycle management, including utilization, upgrades and long-term performance. This reduces the risk of outdated equipment and ensures optimal use of resources throughout the solution’s lifetime.

Customer Success from day one
Customer Success is integrated from the start in the AaaS model. Element Logic will continuously monitor and optimize the solution throughout its entire lifespan with clear performance targets tied to uptime and capacity.
For Equinor, this is about more than technology. It is about predictable operations at a facility where availability is absolutely critical. With Automation as a Service, we take full responsibility for ensuring the solution performs every day, around the clock,” says Andreas Kristensen.

Go-live in the first half of 2026
The system at Mongstad is scheduled to go live in the first half of 2026. Element Logic will stay closely involved throughout the project, with one clear goal: to deliver on our promise of availability, performance and peace of mind.
