Element Logic Builds Germany’s Largest AutoStore System for Thalia

Thalia Bücher GmbH, the leading omnichannel bookseller in German-speaking regions, has commissioned system integrator Element Logic for a large-scale automation project at the Thalia omnichannel hub in Marl. Alongside extensive conveyor technology and material handling equipment, Element Logic is installing Germany’s largest AutoStore system, featuring 280,000 storage bins and 530 robots.
With expertise gained from over 400 system integrations, Element Logic has been chosen as the general contractor for the automated intralogistics solution at Thalia’s large-scale facility in Marl. The project will be executed in two phases.
Key project details:
- Phase 1: Installation of the AutoStore system with 280,000 storage bins and a comprehensive conveyor system.
- Automation Performance: Upon completion, 530 R5 robots will process a five-figure number of bins per hour at 69 connected picking ports.
- Efficient Order Fulfillment: B2C and B2B order picking will occur in two dedicated areas, integrated into the system as tunnels. Supported by Element Logic’s AutoLight system, picking stations can handle up to four target bins simultaneously.
- Optimized Storage and Packaging: 27 additional ports will be used for bulk and small-scale goods storage in a dedicated inbound area. The packaging process will be semi-automated, complemented by fully automatic packing machines.
- Extensive Conveyor Network: Several kilometers of Element Logic-managed conveyor technology will connect AutoStore to the high-turnover zone, packing area, and shipping department.

Germany’s Largest AutoStore Installation
Covering a footprint of over 50,000 square meters, this will be Germany’s largest AutoStore system to date. Element Logic oversees the entire intralogistics project as the general contractor. The first phase of the system is expected to go live in early 2026.
